General Safety Guidelines #
- Store flammable materials (gasoline, solvents, propane tanks) in a well-ventilated area in accordance with local fire codes
- Do not exceed the structural floor load rating when storing very heavy equipment
- Ensure any electrical connections are installed by a licensed electrician and kept dry
- Secure the shed against unauthorized access if chemicals, tools, or valuables are stored inside
- Ensure children cannot become accidentally trapped — consider a lock that can be opened from inside as well as outside
- Do not store food products that attract wildlife unless in sealed, wildlife-proof containers
Fire Safety #
If storing fuel-powered equipment (lawn mowers, generators, etc.), allow the engine to cool completely before storing and keep fuel in approved containers away from ignition sources. Consider a CO detector if the shed is insulated or used as a workspace.
