Where Should I Place My Shed on My Property?

< 1 min read

Key Placement Considerations #

  • Drainage — Avoid low spots where water pools. A slightly elevated, well-drained area protects the base.
  • Access — Ensure you can comfortably open all doors and maneuver large items in and out.
  • Sun Exposure — Position doors and windows to take advantage of natural light.
  • Setback Requirements — some municipalities require minimum distances from property lines. Check with your city before finalizing the location.
  • Underground Utilities — Avoid building over underground utilities. Call Alberta One-Call (1-800-242-3447) before digging.

How Much Clearance Do I Need? #

We recommend leaving at least 12-18 inches of clearance on all sides of the shed for maintenance access, air circulation, and compliance with municipal setback requirements (often 1.0-1.5 metres from property lines).
